Vegan Awareness Weekend Proclamation
P R O C L A M A T I O N
DECLARING NOVEMBER 17-18, 2012
AS “VEGAN AWARENESS WEEKEND”
WHEREAS, the fewer animal products a person eats, the less impact their diet has on the
environment; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Environment Program has declared that a global shift toward a
vegan diet could reduce world hunger, fuel shortages and global climate change; and
WHEREAS, the American Dietetic Association has declared that appropriately-planned vegan diets
are healthful and nutritionally-adequate during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation,
infancy, childhood, and adolescence; and
WHEREAS, the American Dietetic Association also has declared that vegan diets are often
associated with health advantages which include: lower blood cholesterol levels, lower risk of heart disease,
lower blood pressure levels, lower risk of hypertension and type-2 diabetes, lower body mass index, and
lower overall cancer rates; and
WHEREAS, the availability of both delicious and nutritious vegan alternatives, such as dairyless
cheese, ice cream, burgers, and hot dogs, no longer means having to go without favorites; and
WHEREAS, both vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants, cafes, and markets are plentiful in our City.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dave Turner, Mayor of the City of Fort Bragg, on behalf of the entire City
Council, do hereby proclaim Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18, 2012 as “Vegan
Awareness Weekend” in Fort Bragg, California and urge everyone in the community to explore and
educate themselves about this healthy dietary alternative.
